Mt. Huangshuan Hiking Tour

Climbing the Yellow Mountain
Climbing the Yellow Mountain
Huangshan city with its fascinating scenery, especially the famous Yellow Mountain (Mt. Huangshan), attracts more and more hiking tourists all year round.

The transportation in Huangshan is very convenient. It is only three miles (five kilometers) from Huangshan Airport to downtown. You can easily find the shuttle bus in the airport, with ticket costing CNY5. Or you can take a taxi to downtown for approximately CNY25.

Both from Huangshan Railway Station and North Railway Station, there are direct buses leaving for Yellow Mountain Scenic Area. The bus ride is about one hour and the fare is CNY20.
Along the highway, you will reach the south gate of the Yellow Mountain. If you get to the mountain in the late afternoon, you might stay one night in Tangkou Town, located at the foot of the mountain. The hotels and hostels in Tangkou number in hundreds, with different classes and styles, and you can find your preferred standard for an economical price. Here we would like to recommend the Huangshan Yunhailou Hotel for you. The clean rooms with complete facilities and its friendly service help it win a high reputation among travelers. You may check it through 0559-5561109.

The next day, you should get up early to climb up the mountain. There are three identified hiking routes. One is 'Ciguang Pavilion (Mercy Light Pavilion) - Tiandufeng Peak - Yupinglou (Jade Screen Pavilion) - Lotus Peak - Guangmingding (Brightness Top) - Xihai - Beihai', this is called the South Route. The East Huangshan hiking trail is 'Yungu Temple – Baieling (White Goose Ridge) - Shixinfeng Peak - Beihai'. The last one is North Route, Furongling (Lotus Mountain) - Songgu Nunnery - Beihai Hotel. If you choose the first route, you may feel very tired. What's more, it's easy to climb up the Tiandufeng Peak but very dangerous to hike down. Most people prefer the second route, as it's easier to finish.

The third route follows a mountain road of 7.5 miles (12 kilometers). Along this way, you can appreciate the virgin mountains, peaks and so on. Whichever route you take to climb up, you can also take another one as the way descending down. In this way, you will not miss the most beautiful parts.

For the sake of hiking safety, however, keep this saying in mind: Don't walk if you want to enjoy views, and don't get distracted by views while walking.
Also you can have you hiking exploration through Xihai or Donghai grand canyons. After breakfast, start exploring the Grand Canyon, a newly developed scenic spot with breathtaking view. From Paiyun Pavilion to Buxian Bridge, it is over four miles (six kilometers). Along this route, there are numerous steep mountains and deep valleys, really stunning indeed. Its beauty and precipitous nature are simply beyond words! You'll need about six hours to cover the whole loop.
As for the meals during Huangshan trekking, you are advised to have a big breakfast in the hotel before you go climbing. You'd better take some bread or a lunch box as you can only get lunch in the hotel restaurants in the mountain and they are pretty expensive. When you get back in the evening, you can have a good dinner.

As the accommodation on the mountain is expensive, many tourists are staying on the mountain for one night. But if you want to stay for two nights, you will have more time to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Huangshan Mountain.

I suggest you arrive at Zhaixi Transfer Center of Huangshan Mountain in the morning of the first day, and take the green car in the scenic spot to Yungu Temple on the back of Huangshan Mountain. You may take the Yungu cable car to White Goose Ridge firstly, and begin to climb the mountain through Harp Pine, Shixin Peak, Heihu Pine, Beihai Hotel and finally check in at the Xihai Hotel, where you can go to Paiyun Pavilion to appreciate the sunset on the mountain. On the second day, you can go through Xihai Grand canyon and take a cable car from Gudi to Baiyun Hotel and stay one night. After check in procedure, you can go to Bright Peak, another famous place of Huangshan montain for enjoying sunrise and sunset. On the third day, you will pass through Aoyu Peak, Lotus Pavilion, Greeting Pine and climb the most difficult peak of Huangshan, Tiandu peak and down to Ciguang Pavilion. Afterwards, transfer to the scenic bus to the end of the trip. Besides, please book the hotel at least two weeks in advance. Hope you a nice journey!

Price and Review of Jade Hotel on top of Mount Huangshan?
My friends and I are planning to visit the mountain this Friday. Does anyone know the specific price for a one night's stay in the Jade Hotel at the top of the mountain? And, if you have stayed there, what did you think of it?

Hi, if you want to stay overnight on the top of the mountain, I would like to recommend Xihai Hotel, Beihai Hotel or Shilin Hotel for you. They are all good star hotels. As for the Jade Hotel, you are suggested to contact the hotel directly for the detailed price.

What about Hostels on the Huangshan Mountain?
Aside from the hotel, are there any cheaper stays on the mountain? Such a hostel? If so, how much does it cost?

hi, there are many hostels on the mountain offer a kind of cheaper room selling with bed price. A bed in the 6 - 12 persons in one room costs around CNY100. There is also one room accommodating 2-3 persons with a higher price. But I would like to remind you that the room cleanness, facilities and service quality are poor.

Is it ok to stay in Huangshan and go to the mountain for a hike?
Hello guys

I plan on staying 1 night in a hotel in Huangshan. Since the hotel is not one of those in the scenic area of the mountain, I wanna know if it is doable to take the bus to the Yellow Mountain from Huangshan early in the morning and just spend the day there and then get back to Huangshan.

Thank you

Also, I saw here that there are more than one route and cable cars in the mountain. With that in mind, I would like to know which one is the best one for sight seeing and if it is possible to do 2 in the same day since I won't be having more than a day in the mountain.

It is a bit rush to go to the mountain from Huangshan city and then get back in a day. It takes at least one hour to drive from city area to the mountain for one way. You are suggested to take cable car up and down due to the limited time. There are several cableways for you to choose and Yungu cableway is the most recommended.

the Plank road is located at Xihai Valley, so when you reach Bright Summit, you need to take the route to Xihai Valley. You will find clear direction boards in both English and Chinese on the mountain.
