At 21:19 on August 8, 2017, China’s Sichuan Province was hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake, with the epicenter being Jiuzhaigou County of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. Jiuzhai Valley Forest Park is within the affected area and thus being closed temporarily for safety concern. Trains passing by the county have also stopped operation while airports are still in normal operation.

During the 41th World Heritage Convention held in July 2017, China’s Gulangyu Island in Xiamen Fujian Province and Hoh Xil Natural Reserve in Yushu Qinghai Province were inscribed respectively as world cultural and natural heritages by the UNESCO. To date, China owns 52 world heritage sites.

As of July 1, 2017, China Railway Corporation will use a new train timetable. There will be more trains in operation, including those bullet trains running during peak travel days. Since then, Lanzhou will become an important transportation hub linking northwestern and eastern China. The adjustments may alleviate the summer travel rush in 2017, but passengers still are advised to book train tickets as soon as possible.

On the Executive Board meeting of the UNESCO on May 5th, 2017, China’s Keketuohai National Park in Xinjiang and Arxan National Geopark in Inner Mongolia have been inscribed as global geoparks, along with six other sites in Mexico, France, South Korea, Spain and Iran. Currently, there are altogether 127 geological parks from 35 countries, of which 35 belong to China.

The 7th Shanghai Cherry Blossom Festival started on March 15, 2017 and will end on April 14. Gucun Park is the main venue. Besides, the festival is held at seven other parks like Gongqing Forest Park, Fengxian Haiwan National Forest Park, and Pudong Century Park. During the festival, visitors cannot only appreciate the flowers in the park, but also participate in some funny games and cultural activities.

As of March 1, 2017, China will adopt the real-name policy for taking long-distance buses between cities and provinces. All passengers will be required to show valid ID documents when buying the tickets and getting onboard, including Chinese citizens and foreign travelers or expats. In addition, children under 1.2 meters (3.9 feet) traveling for free will also need to get a ticket.
