2024 Lunar New Year falls on February 10th.

The public holiday lasts from February 9th to February 15th, during which the New Year's Eve on February 9th and the New Year's Day on February 10th are the peak time of celebration.

The commonly known New Year calendar counts from the New Year's Eve to the Lantern Festival on February 24th 2024.

According to the old folk customs, the traditional celebration starts even earlier, from the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month.

Why do Chinese New Year dates change every year?

Chinese New Year dates vary slightly between years, but it usually comes during the period from January 21st to February 20th in Gregorian calendar. The dates change every year because the festival is based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The lunar calendar is associated with the movement of the moon, which usually defines traditional festivals like the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival), Lantern FestivalDragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Day.

The lunar calendar is also associated with 12 animal signs in Chinese zodiac, so every 12 years is regarded as a cycle. 2023 is a Year of the Rabbit, while 2024 turns to be a Year of the Dragon.

What am I as far as chinese sign
My birthday is jan 23 1958. What does that make me for my chinese sign. Sometimes the Chinese New Year is before my birthday and sometimes it falls after my birthday.

It depends entirely on the year you were born, so for 1958, if your birthday was before when the new year was celebrated, you count as the previous year. If you were born after it, you count as the 'same' year as normal.

Does Gung Hay Fat Choi
First, what is the proper spelling of Gung Hay Fat Choi and does it correlate with Lunar New year, Chinese New Year etc or is that a slight ?

Every country have different dialect and accent for Chinese language. Mine are spelled like Gong Xi Fa Chai. I was told it just mean congratulations for your fortune. So just greet with Gong Xi is already appropriate for most of the time

theres two ways of saying it, the one the original comment typed was the cantonese version, the one u put is the mandarin version
