Day 1 Karnak Temple - Luxor Temple - Mummification Museum
This one day Luxor independent travel itinerary for reference starts from Sweet Hostel. It is on the Luxor East Bank, also the city center, only 200 meters (220 yards) from Luxor Train Station, 500 meters (550 yards) from Luxor Temple and 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from Luxor International Airport. The hotel offers free pick-up service from the train station or the airport. You just need to inform the staff your train or flight information and phone number.
Today's first recommended stop is Karnak Temple, the largest temple complex in Egypt and one of the most popular temples in Luxor. After about 4,000 years' erosion, the carvings and murals inside still keep clear and vivid. It is about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the Sweet Hostel. If travel by taxi, it needs about 10 minutes and costs around EGP20. In addition, there are many micro buses running to Karnak Temple from downtown, whose ticket fare is only EGP2 per person. If travel by micro bus, you’d better ask the hotel staff where to get onboard and confirm with the bus driver the destination before getting on. Also, as most micro bus drivers don't understand English, you may ask the hotel staff to write down your destination in Arabic beforehand, which you can show to the driver when confirm with him the destination.
Karnak Temple is open from 06:00 to 17:00. To avoid crowds, you are advised to arrive there before 09:00. Entry ticket fare is EGP200 per person and there is no camera ticket.
After, go back to your hotel, have lunch and stay in the hotel till afternoon to escape from the hot sun outside.
At around 17:00, you are suggested to go out to visit Luxor Temple, built for the Sun God Amon, his wife Mut and his son the Moon God. Located about 700 meters (770 yards) northwest to Sweet Hostel and on the bank of the Nile, you can get there on foot in about 10 minutes along the Nile bank. Ticket fare is EGP160 per person. Please note it is not so easy to find its ticket office, which is by the entrance of an underground passage behind the bus parking lots. If you cannot find it, don't hesitate to ask help from the staff or policemen nearby. The temple is open from 06:00 to 22:00. The recommended visit time is 1-2 hours. When the night falls and the lights are on, the Luxor Temple is even more beautiful and it will be regretful to miss the night views.
If you still have energy after visiting the Luxor Temple, you may go northeast for about 750 meters (820 yards) to visit a mini museum, the Mummification Museum. It displays not only the making process of mummies, but also many animal mummies, like cat mummies, crocodile mummies, and bird mummies, etc. The ticket fare is EGP100 per person and open time is 09:00-14:00 and 17:00-21:00.
At the end of the day, have a stroll along the bank of the Nile River to go back to your hotel while appreciating the night scenes along the world's longest river.
