In general, Mongolia has a relatively sound transportation system for either getting into the country or getting around after going there. Visitors can enter the country by air, train or bus, and travel around by air or road.

As the only international airport in Mongolia, the Chinggis Khaan Airport is located 18 kilometers (11 miles) to the southwest of Ulaanbaatar. The airport operates international flights to/from some cities including Beijing, Hohhot, Osaka, Tokyo, Seoul, Berlin, Moscow, and Irkutsk. Usually, international flights are operated by those airlines such as MIAT, Aeroflot, Korean Air and Air China. In summer, MIAT may add flights to/from Singapore and Hong Kong. JAL and ANA may also add flights.

Tourists can also enter Mongolia by railway, but they need to make a transfer in China or Russia (See also Ulaanbaatar Train Station). Trans-Siberian Railway connects Moscow in Russia with Beijing in China via Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. The Beijing - Ulaanbaatar direct train takes about 27 hours for a single journey. Cross-border train travel is a pretty good and interesting experience if you want to have a completely different journey. Only sleepers are provided on those trains, so you can have a good rest and you have a chance to see beautiful scenery along the way. Tourists can either purchase the international train tickets through a designated ticket counter at railway stations or through a travel agency, but the agency will charge commission fee.

If tourists want to enter Mongolia via road, they can go to China first and then take an international coach to the final destination. Both Beijing and Erenhot provide international coaches to/from Zamyn-Üüd.
 

Muxiyuan Caihua Long-distance Bus Station in Beijing operates a coach to Zamyn-Üüd at 18:10. The ticket fare is about CNY220 per person for a single journey.
 

Or passengers can go to Erenhot in Mongolia to take a coach to Zamyn-Üüd. Erenhot Coach Station operates direct coaches to Zamyn-Üüd at a cost of CNY60.
 

If visitors want to travel by flight inside Mongolia, they need to make a transfer in Ulaanbaatar no matter where they want to go. There are two airlines including MIAT and Aero Mongolia for passengers' convenience. Both airlines have fixed flight schedule, but in summer between June and August, the airlines may operate more regular flights and some chartered flights. However, the added flight information cannot be found online. Tourists can only learn about the information via local travel agencies.
 

Only a few public buses are provided in big cities and no regular schedule is provided either. Buses will leave only when all seats are taken, which may take several hours. They may also stop along the way to have a rest.

Only a few taxi companies such as Ulaanbaatar taxi, Noyon taxi, Telecom taxi, 1616 taxi, and iTaxi having official licenses are operated in Ulaanbaatar. In other smaller cities such as Darkhan, Erdenet, Baganuur and Zuunmod, only a few local taxi companies are in service. Usually, it can also be found that many private unlicensed cars are used as taxis. It usually takes MNT 700-800 per kilometer. Foreign travelers should ask the driver to meter or negotiate the ticket price in advance to avoid being deceived.
 

Visitors can also rent a car and drive on their own, but they should note that the traffic condition is rather bad in Mongolia because of the poor road conditions and numerous cars crammed in the streets. Both traffic jams and traffic accidents may occur frequently. The condition may become worse on weekends. In order to have a safe journey, they should learn about the traffic rules carefully in advance and abide them when going out. They had better find a local translator to accompany them to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings. Generally speaking, the roads between Ulaanbaatar and Darkhan, Erdenet, Sukhbaatar, or Altanbulag are better than those in other places.
